The launching of the 1st National Youth Forum on Heritage (1NYFH) last Thursday coincided with the nation's commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the Central and North Luzon earthquake of 1990. NYFH Chairman Ian Alfonso asked the guests in the launching at the Center for Kapampangan Studies, Holy Angel University, Angeles City a minute of silence.
The NYFH Secretariat dedicated the launching in memory of the for those who had perished in the said natural disaster, who were mostly students
Part of the topics to be discussed in the 1NYFH in the Philippine High School for the Arts, Mt. Makiling, Los Baños, Laguna is the proactive response in saving and retrieving important historic and cultural items from fire, flood, and natural disasters. Like built heritages, documents and artifacts such as old photos and heirloom accounts and ephemera are also in danger.
Ric Favis, NYFH adviser and a former cultural affairs officer of the UNESCO Regional Office in Bangkok, addressed this concern to the NYFH Secretariat. Digitization, invetorying, and conserving these items should be addressed not only to the local government units but also to the national cultural agencies for technical support and capacity-building.
